Illustrator works with vectors: shapes defined by points and curves rather than pixels. That means a logo drawn in Illustrator stays perfectly sharp whether it appears on a business card or a billboard, which is why the program is the standard tool for brand identities, icons, infographics, packaging and technical drawings. You draw with pens and shape tools, combine and cut paths, apply colours and gradients, set type and prepare versions for different sizes and formats. Files can be exported for print or the web and moved into other Adobe apps such as Photoshop. The program has been developed since 1988, and the 2026 generation, which started with version 30.0 in October 2025, has received regular updates since. Because Illustrator is used by agencies and printers worldwide, its files are often what clients and print shops expect.
Illustrator is available only as a subscription, either on its own or as part of a larger Creative Cloud plan. Students and teachers can usually get discounted pricing. Check the current offers on adobe.com before buying.
Download Illustrator only from Adobe. Cracked versions from file-sharing sites are a common source of malware and can put client files at risk. Keep Adobe's apps updated for security fixes.
Illustrator is the natural choice for professional designers, agencies and print shops that exchange vector files every day, and for students who plan a career in design. Hobbyists who only make an occasional logo or poster may prefer a cheaper or free tool, and people who mostly retouch photos need a raster editor instead. Before subscribing, use the trial to confirm that your PC handles large documents comfortably and that your usual workflow feels natural.
